What is Epoxy High Build Coating?

Epoxy high build coating refers to a thick-layered resin flooring system made from 100% solids epoxy. Applied at a typical thickness of 300–500 microns per coat, this system creates a seamless, durable surface that bonds directly to the concrete substrate.

Unlike standard epoxy paints or sealers, high build epoxy is engineered to withstand the rigours of industrial operations. It acts as a dust sealer, protecting production areas from airborne concrete particles, a critical requirement in precision manufacturing environments where contamination could compromise sensitive components such as engines or electronics.

This type of epoxy flooring also provides a defensive barrier against oil ingress and minor chemical exposure. Once oils penetrate uncoated concrete, the floor becomes increasingly difficult to clean, maintain, or overcoat. A high build epoxy coating helps prevent this by sealing the concrete surface from day one.

The primary difference lies in film thickness and performance:

Low build epoxy coatings (typically 100–200 microns) are thin, often used as decorative sealers or light-duty protection in areas with minimal wear. They offer some surface enhancement but limited durability or chemical resistance.

High build epoxy coatings are thicker (300–500 microns per coat), offering better abrasion resistance, stronger protection against contamination, and longer service life. They are preferred in active industrial settings where durability and hygiene are critical.

High build epoxy flooring is resistant to occasional washdowns and surface moisture, but it is not suitable for areas with constant wet processing or chemical exposure (e.g. food production, chemical manufacturing). In those environments, a polyurethane or novolac system may be more appropriate.

Yes, when installed over a properly prepared substrate, high build epoxy coating can easily handle light to moderate forklift and pallet truck traffic. For heavy-duty logistics areas, we may recommend additional reinforcement layers or a thicker system build.

Yes, provided the floor is clean and properly prepared, high build epoxy flooring can be recoated to extend its life or refresh safety markings.

No. Standard high build epoxy coatings will yellow or discolour under UV exposure, so they are not recommended for external areas or near open roller shutters. For UV stability, a polyaspartic or aliphatic polyurethane topcoat can be applied.

Yes. To ensure maximum adhesion and performance, a penetrating epoxy primer is typically applied first. This helps seal the concrete substrate and prevents pinholes or delamination.
