What is Fire Resistant Flooring?

In resin flooring, fire resistance is achieved through specialist formulations designed to slow ignition and limit flame spread. Intumescent additives react to heat by expanding and forming an insulating char layer, which helps protect the substrate beneath from high temperatures.

Fire retardant systems also include flame inhibiting compounds that increase the ignition temperature and reduce how quickly flames can spread across the surface. Some advanced systems combine both intumescent and fire retardant technologies to provide higher levels of protection and improved overall fire performance.

No resin type is inherently fire resistant in its standard formulation, but this can be engineered through additives and formulation modifications. Epoxy resin flooring offers the most established fire-resistant options, achieving Class 0 or 1 ratings for surface spread of flame. Polyurethane and polyaspartic systems can achieve good fire resistance ratings, whilst MMA typically achieve moderate ratings. The achievable fire resistance depends more on formulation than resin chemistry; a fire-resistant epoxy significantly outperforms standard polyurethane, but fire-resistant polyurethane may match standard epoxy performance. Specifications should focus on tested fire ratings rather than assuming any particular resin type provides inherent fire resistance.

Standard resin flooring is combustible and will not withstand direct fire exposure. However, fire-resistant resin formulations can withstand fire for specified periods measured through standardised testing. These systems don’t make the floor fireproof, they slow ignition, reduce flame spread and maintain integrity for defined periods (typically 30-120 minutes depending on specification). Fire-resistant resins achieve this through intumescent additives that foam when heated, creating an insulating char layer, or flame retardants that inhibit combustion. Performance varies significantly based on formulation, application thickness and substrate protection. Critically, fire resistance ratings apply to complete floor systems, not just the resin coating; substrate preparation and primer selection significantly influence overall fire performance.

Standard epoxy flooring will burn when exposed to sufficient heat. However, fire-resistant epoxy flooring formulations are readily available and widely specified where fire protection matters. These modified systems incorporate flame retardants and intumescent additives, achieving Class 0, Class 1 or equivalent EN 13501-1 ratings. Fire-resistant epoxy maintains the chemical resistance, durability and seamless properties of standard epoxy whilst adding critical fire protection. Standard epoxy might ignite at 350-400°C and contribute to fire spread, whilst fire-resistant epoxy resists ignition above 600°C and achieves minimal flame spread classifications. When specifying epoxy for environments with fire risks, always confirm the fire resistance rating through test certification.
