What is Resin Line Marking and Demarcation?

Resin line marking is pigmented epoxy, polyurethane or MMA applied to a prepared floor to form permanent lines, hatching and zone infills. Resin floor demarcation uses those markings to separate pedestrian, MHE and storage activity by design.

Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, that separation is a control measure, not decoration. Industrial floor marking laid over an unprepared slab lifts under the first forklift turn, so preparation and set-out decide its working life.

Line Marking and Demarcation Regulations

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require traffic routes to be organised, so that pedestrians and vehicles move safely. HSE guidance HSG136 expects those routes to be clearly marked and consistently applied.

Safety colours are governed by BS 5499 and ISO 3864, which identify red for fire equipment and prohibition, yellow for hazard, blue for mandatory, green for safe condition and escape. The Safety Signs and Signals Regulations 1996 also require yellow-and-black or red-and-white striping to permanent obstacles.

Our Demarcation & Resin Line Marking Process

Marking a live site is a sequencing problem as much as a coatings one. We work to a fixed five-stage process so you know what is happening on your floor, when each area comes out of service and when it can be trafficked again.

We attend the site, assess the substrate, moisture content and existing coating, and walk your traffic routes with you. You get a documented marking scheme, colour specification and costed proposal before anything is committed.

We set the layout against the Workplace Regulations, HSE traffic route guidance and BS 5499 / ISO 3864 colour conventions, then issue a drawing for your sign-off. Line widths, colours, symbols and text are fixed at this stage, so there are no surprises on the floor.

The marking footprint is mechanically prepared to remove laitance, contamination and redundant markings, then set out from the agreed drawing and masked to a clean edge. Resin is laid in the specified system, film build and colour, and cured to manufacturer’s data before the area is trafficked.

We walk the finished scheme with you against the signed-off drawing and hand over the specification, colour references and product data sheets. We hold your spec on file, so touch-ups, refreshes and future extensions match the original exactly.

Line Marking & Demarcation FAQs

A demarcation line is a permanent floor marking that defines the boundary of a zone, separating one type of activity from another. On an industrial floor it usually indicates who or what is allowed in that area, such as a pedestrian-only walkway, a forklift route or a keep-clear zone.

A green-edged pedestrian gangway running alongside a yellow forklift route is the most common example on a warehouse floor. Others include yellow-and-black hatching in front of a fire exit, outlined pallet drop zones and marked quarantine areas for goods on hold.

Correctly specified and installed over a properly prepared substrate, resin line marking typically lasts five to ten years, and often longer in areas outside direct MHE turning circles. Life expectancy is driven by preparation quality, resin system and traffic intensity rather than by the marking itself.

The techniques are the same; the demands differ. Warehouse floor line marking is dominated by racking layouts, aisle definition, loading bays and MHE routes, whereas wider industrial floor marking also has to handle machine footprints, chemical exposure, thermal cycling and process-specific zoning.

Cost is driven by linear metreage, line width, colour count, surface condition and how much preparation or removal of old markings is needed, so it’s quoted per project rather than per square metre. Our site survey is free and gives you a fixed, itemised price before any commitment.

Yes. Systems are specified against your actual loading, so counterbalance FLT, reach truck, pallet truck and HGV traffic are all accounted for, with higher-build epoxy or MMA systems used where turning and braking forces are most severe.

Routine mechanical sweeping and neutral-pH scrubbing is normally all that’s needed, avoiding aggressive solvents that can soften the resin. We recommend an annual visual inspection of high-traffic zones, with localised touch-ups scheduled before markings degrade to the point of full reinstatement.
